Cropping Update

The earliest corn planted at NWRC was on April 4 in two planting date studies. It took 3 weeks for that corn to emerge, which is understandable as it took that long to accumulate the 110+ Growing Degree Days necessary to emerge. Stand counts taken 2 weeks after emergence show an average of 92% emergence, which is very good considering the wet and cool soils.

Some of the corn was planted the week of April 20, but most of the corn at NWRC was planted the first week of May. The 2nd planting date in the corn studies was on April 24, with emergence 2 weeks after planting. Corn planted May 1 was just emerging 11 days later.

Wheat is in the late jointing stage with the flag leaf emerging (Feekes 8), and the head starting up the stem in some of the earliest tillers. The wheat looks very good where it survived the winter. The wheat was killed out in some lower lying patches that had ice set on them late in the winter. Many of these winter kill spots were just a tire track or similar depression on some of our flatter fields. Leaf health looks good so far.

The oat trial was planted April 7. The crop emerged in good shape and is growing well.
The first soybean study was planted May 6.
