Crop Progress

The oat trial was planted on March24, and the nitrogen was applied to the wheat and oat fields that week. The wheat is starting to grow before the next cold weather hits. There appears to be a little wheat damaged by ice in a few low spots. This week the soil conditions were very good for tillage, allowing us to knife in nitrogen (28%) on over half of our corn fields. The first planting date for a soybean study was planted this week (April 4) as well.

Research at NWRC for 2003

Plans are being finalized for research studies to be conducted at NWRC in 2003. There have been several new studies added along a number of multi-year studies continuing. Three of the new studies involve management of corn, either as second year corn or continuous corn. Some of the factors looked at will include tillage, fertility, plant population, and timing of residue incorporation. An additional corn study will compare 30" rows with twin-row corn at different populations.

The new soybean studies include screening varieties for Sudden Death Syndrome resistance, the influence of planting date and row spacing on weed control, and planting date effects on brown stem rot and green stem. Soybeans will also be compared to wheat as a environment for Western Corn Rootworm beetles to lay their eggs.

A list of the current research projects and the researchers involved is following . Additional studies may be added through the season.
