Various Ways of Getting OFFICE Upgraded and Fixed

The easiest way to get Service Packs and Hotfixes is to go the Microsoft Office site with Internet Explorer at office.microsoft.com and following their automated procedure for updates. However, for the Service Packs this can be slower than doing it more directly as given below. For the just the hotfixes, it is faster to go to the Microsoft site. The following information applies for any method of updating your 2000 installation. See below for XP or 97. Unless a copy of the cd was made to your computer (newest installations only - look for a subdirectory that begins "MSO2K...or MSOXP"), you will get asked for a cd with Office Standard, Professional, or Premium when doing the updates. One of the following 3 items should apply in most cases where the cd copy isn't locally installed

If you have the cd, put it in your cd drive (but exit any autoinstall that starts up) or please see me if you can't access the software as indicated below (if the computer support group installed this software, we install from the MS Select Office 2000 Premium version or the XP Professional version) .

For those persons in the Cropsci-Admin domain group, you will find a subdirectory called MSO2Kcd1 on your network Apps drive (j\Apps\MSO2kcd1) that you will select.

For those with access to the Cropsci Domain machine Agn-statlab-nts and the \Software subdirectory, I've put the MSO2Kcd1 in a subdirectory called \software2. Before doing the update indicated, you must access the drive first by going to Start\Run and enter "\\agn-statlab-nts\software2" into the box and then enter the guest logon/password if and when asked.

For Office XP, you need to refer to the installed copy of the cd or borrow the cd from me or staff in M103 Turner. The cd image may be in the subdirectory "c:\Program Files\msoxp". You will need to be able to point to one of these locatons to do the updates so you need to know where to go in advance of the next steps.

If you have Microsoft OFFICE 2000 with or without Service Packs 1 and 2 installed or 2002 (XP) and doing the update online:

With Internet Explorer, go to http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx and follow the download directions. This site should automatically check your version of Office 2000/XP and suggest the various patches and updates. If you don't have Service Packs 1 or 2 installed you will see these listed as additional choices and you will need to install each one first, rebooting as required before getting to the macro patches.

When asked for the location of the Office Installation CD do one of the following

Office 2000: Cropsci-admin domain: Enter J:\Apps\MSO2Kcd1 into the location box and choose DATA1.MSI

Office 2000: Cropsci domain/workgroup: Enter \\agn-statlab-nts\software2\mso2kcd1 and choose DATA1.MSI

Office 2000 or XP CD: You will need to "browse" to the subdirectory or your CD drive containing the original installation materials for Office, to the location of the file called "data1.msi" or "PRO.MSI" and select it.

Repeat these steps as necessary until you have installed both service packs and the patches. There are three macro patches, one each for Excel and Powerpoint, as well as an earlier one for Word. Install the suggested macro vulnerability patches, other security patches for Office and Outlook , and you will be finished.

Alternatives for Microsoft OFFICE 2000 missing Service Packs or with no IE functionality or via the CropSci Server/complete CD:

To install service packs and macro patches via the CropSci software server or the "complete CD" follow these directions:

If you don't have Office Service Packs 1 and 2 installed, you will have to get these installed first. You will need a copy of the Office 2000 CD to install Service Release 1 (SR-1) (unless the CD is copied onto your machine - almost all installations done by Jason or more recently should have it buried somewhere on your hard drive and if you try the Service Pack or Macro Fix, it will find it automatically). Otherwise, you can borrow a CD from us or you can point to one of two sources on the network as listed above if you have appropriate access.

We have a CD with Office 2000, the 2 Service Packs, and the hotfixes combined. The complete set of service packs and patches is also available on the department software server by going to the Agn-statlab-nts server in the cropsci domain under the folder "Software\Software Updates\Office 2000". You can get to the folder by going to "Start\Run" and entering:

\\agn-statlab-nts\software

and then going to \Software Updates\Office 2000 or by browsing to this location using Network Neighborhood. For more info on the cropsci domain server and accessing it, see the related article, General Instructions on accessing "The Server"

Alternatively, run the service packs from the server which are in the subdirectory or on the CD drive at cddrive:\RUN THESE UPDATES AFTER YOU INSTALL

1.) Install Service Pack 1a by choosing "SR-1a (local).exe" in the Service Pack 1 subdirectory on the server or by choosing "First.exe" on the CD. There are several steps here:

a.) tell the program to unpack the files to c:\temp

b.) on completion of extracting, go to c:\temp and run "Setup.exe"

c.) follow the prompts and if asked for a copy of the cd, enter the path to the copy of the cd such as "\\agn-statlab-nts\software2\mso2kcd1\data1.msi" or for those on the administrative server, "j:\apps\mso2kcd1\data1.msi"

2.) Go to Windows\Temp and erase all files and subdiretories (or whereever your temp files are kept) and delete the files that were created by step 1 in subdirectory c:\temp.

3.) Install Service Pack 2 by choosing "sp2wkstation.exe" in the service pack 2 subdirectory on the server or "Second.exe" on the CD.

4.) Run each of the hotfixes in the "Office Hotfixes" subdirectory or go to office update site (this is easier) at http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx using IE. Even if you run all the hotfixes off of the CD, it is important that you go to the site to double check your installation as new fixes have come out since the CD was made.
